Easy Red Hair Dye Removal: How To Get Red Out of Your Hair

Easy Red Hair Dye Removal: How To Get Red Out of Your Hair

Ready to switch up your fiery red locks? We get it! While that vibrant crimson hue may have been exactly what you wanted a few weeks ago, sometimes you're just ready for a change.

Let's dive into some tried-and-true methods to help you bid farewell to your red tresses without sacrificing the health of your hair.✨

The Gentlest Option: Wash More Frequently 🧼

    Poison fading

Shampoo is your bestie! Up your wash days to gradually break down red pigment over multiple washes. Red dye molecules are larger than other colors, which makes them both long-lasting and eventually easier to wash out as they start to break down.

Use warm water (not hot!) and our Resurrected Shampoo to gently encourage those pigments to release their grip. If you need some extra strength, add a clarifying shampoo to your routine once or twice a week.

PRO TIP: Use Money Hunny as a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair moisturized and happy during this process. More frequent washing can be drying, so this step is crucial!

Next Best Thing: Vitamin C Hair Mask☀️

    Ritual fading

For a bit more fading power without harsh chemicals, try this DIY vitamin C treatment:

    1. Mix colorless vitamin C powder or crushed vitamin C tablets with your shampoo to create a paste

    2. Apply to damp hair (not soaking wet)

    3. Leave on for 30-60 minutes

    4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water

The acidic properties of vitamin C help break down artificial color molecules while being gentler than chemical removers.

PRO TIP: Follow up with a deep conditioning hair mask like Pool Party to re-hydrate your locks! This treatment can be slightly drying, so showing your hair some extra love afterward is essential.

    Last Resort: Bleach Bath🛁

    Wrath fading

When gentler methods aren't cutting it, a bleach bath can help lift that stubborn red dye color. This diluted bleach method is less harsh than full bleaching but still effective:

    1. Combine 1 part bleach powder, 2 parts developer (20 volume or lower), and 2 parts shampoo to create a paste

    2. Apply to damp hair

    3. Leave on for 5-20 minutes (check frequently!)

    4. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a deep conditioner

PRO TIP: Use our White Powder Bleach for a colorless formula that allows you to easily monitor your lifting process. The transparent mix helps you see exactly when those red tones start to lift!

    Frequently Asked Questions💭

Is red hair dye hard to get out?

Red hair can be a blessing and a curse because it lasts a long time on one hand, but on the other, once you're ready to switch gears, it can be a little stubborn to remove. This is especially true for permanent red dyes, which penetrate the hair shaft and chemically alter the structure, making them significantly more difficult to remove than semi-permanent red dyes that only coat the hair's outer layer and gradually wash out over 4-12 weeks.

Luckily, there are several ways to remove red hair dye such as washing more frequently, using a DIY vitamin C hair mask, or doing a bleach bath. The approach you choose should depend on whether you're dealing with semi-permanent or permanent color, as permanent formulas typically require more intensive removal methods. Please reach out to our color specialists via email at support@arcticfoxusa.com for personalized assistance!

How can I remove red hair color without damaging my hair?

Your gentlest options are frequent washing with warm water and Resurrected shampoo or trying the vitamin C mask method. Both of these approaches gradually fade the color without harsh chemicals. You can also check out our previous blog on the best colors to cover red if you're looking to transition rather than remove it completely!

Can I use bleach to remove red hair dye?

Yes, the bleach bath method mentioned above is effective, but always do a strand test before proceeding with your whole head.

Remember that bleach will always cause some level of damage, so use with caution, follow all instructions carefully, and never leave it on longer than recommended.

How do I tone out stubborn red tones in my hair?

Use a cool-toned shade like Periwinkle mixed with Arctic Mist Diluter to neutralize leftover red tones. The blue-purple pigments in Periwinkle will help cancel out any lingering warmth.

Winter Hair Care Tips to Keep Your Strands Happy & Healthy ❄️💇‍♀️✨

Winter Hair Care Tips to Keep Your Strands Happy & Healthy ❄️💇‍♀️✨

Apply it once a week to give your hair a deep, replenishing boost of moisture. This rich mask will leave your locks feeling soft, shiny, and super nourished—perfect for combatting the cold, dry air outside. Bonus: it smells amazing, so you’ll feel like you’ve just stepped out of a spa!🌊💆‍♀️

    2. Extra TLC with Money Hunny 💛

For those extra dry spots or parched ends, Money Hunny is your go-to for a little extra tender love and care. This nourishing repair serum adds hydration and shine, making it the perfect treatment for dry, damaged strands. Whether you apply it to damp hair for a silky smooth finish or use it on dry ends for a quick shine boost, Money Hunny is the little luxury your hair deserves.✨👑

    3. Keep Your Color Vibrant with Resurrected Shampoo & Conditioner 💧💇‍♀️

Maintaining vibrant color during the winter can be tricky, especially with the harsh, dry air. The solution? Arctic Fox Resurrected Shampoo & Conditioner! These color-safe products will keep your color looking fresh while gently cleansing and moisturizing your hair. Tip: Wash your hair with cold water to help seal the cuticle and preserve your color longer. The cold water also prevents excess moisture loss, helping your strands stay soft and shiny.🌈💦

    Additional Winter Hair Care Tips🌨️

While products are key, there are a few other simple habits that can help protect your hair this season:

    • Protective Hairstyles: Try wearing your hair in braids or buns to minimize exposure to the cold and prevent split ends. These styles help lock in moisture and keep your hair tucked away from the elements. 💁‍♀️✨
    • Wear a Hat or Scarf: Protect your hair from the harsh winter winds with a cozy hat or jumbo scarf—especially a silk-lined one! Silk-lined hats will prevent static and frizz while protecting your hair from the drying effects of the cold.🧢🧣
    • Invest in a Humidifier: Dry indoor heat can strip moisture from your hair, but adding a humidifier to your space helps replenish hydration in the air, leaving your hair feeling soft and moisturized.🌬️💧
    • Extend Time Between Wash Days: Winter weather can make your scalp dry, so try extending the time between washes to keep natural oils intact and maintain your hair’s moisture balance. When you do wash, always use a gentle, color-safe shampoo and conditioner and rinse with cold water.🥶⏳
    • Avoid Hot Tools: While it's tempting to reach for your curlers or flat iron while styling, try to limit your use of hot tools in the winter months. Heat can further dry out your strands, so embrace your natural texture or air-dry your hair whenever possible.🧖‍♀️💨

Winter Hair Care: Maintaining Hair Health and Hydration During the Cold Months

Winter Hair Care: Maintaining Hair Health and Hydration During the Cold Months

    @pasteljacqueline in Poseidon

We’ve been in denial but summer is long gone, and the fall vibes are quickly fading into winter. As the cold months settle in, your tanning routine, skincare routine, and hair care routine are probably all undergoing a major change. So that calls for a whole new routine! AKA an excuse to indulge in some new self care, but hey, who are we to judge!?

The same hair advice we preach year ‘round for both lasting color AND ultimate hair health is don’t 👏🏻 wash 👏🏻 your 👏🏻hair 👏🏻 every 👏🏻 day. And guess what, that advice still applies during the colder months even though you might be sweating less, staying in more, and opting for a movie night instead of a night out with the girls. In any case, having designated wash days once or twice a week is a great way to keep that moisture locked into your strands for as long as possible.

When it is wash day, make sure you’re using a color safe and sulfate free shampoo and conditioner! This step makes the biggest difference, and shampoo and conditioner is not the place to skimp out when it comes to your hair care routine! Our Resurrected Duo is vegan, color-safe, and sulfate-free, and it’s also PACKED with amino acids and antioxidants that contribute to hair strength and hydration. Resurrected shampoo is formulated with argan and macadamia nut oil to hydrate and soften while adding shine and reducing frizz. PERFECT for those winter months when hair static is an absolute pain in the a🫢. Shea butter, castor oil, and sunflower seed oil (just to name a few!) are the allstar ingredients in Resurrected conditioner - all of the above boost hydration, strengthen each strand, and leave you with soft, nourished strands. Ugh, can it be wash day already!?

Even though winter seems to be the time to turn that shower knob as hot as it can go, remember your hair needs extra moisture during these months and a lower water temperature is your best friend! Try a lukewarm lather and rinse finished off with some cold water - this will help prevent brittle and breakage on those lovely strands.

Whenever you do venture out into the cold, try a protective style like braids, a low bun, or tuck it into your favorite beanie! Depending on where you live, cold air or harsh elements actually dry out your hair and can contribute to breakage, so protecting your strands is a MUST. Silk or satin headwraps or pillowcases will be an absolute lifesaver during the dryer months - your hair will thank you. 🤝

Our favorite ✨Pro Tip✨ when it comes to keeping your hair ULTRA healthy and moisturized is adding in a pre shower hair mask to your routine. If you’ve been looking for a hair mask bestie to really take your haircare routine to the next level, Pool Party might just blow you out of the water! She’s packed with top tier vegan ingredients - castor, argan, sunflower seed oil, and apple fruit extract - a power team that accelerates hair growth, strengthens strands, fights frizz, and boosts hair hydration. Wow, that was a mouthful.

There’s more than one way to party it up with Pool Party if you forget to marinate your locks before a shower! You can apply it any time to dry ends for a quick hydration boost, use it instead of conditioner during a shower, OR mix it up and use it as a wet styling cream (but maybe save that one for summer).

Sometimes a pre shower mask and the perfect wash day routine still calls for some back up. Money Hunny Repair Serum is the IT girl of our haircare line. Her formula is silky, lightweight, and actually repairs split ends. With a blend of argan, babussa, arginine, avocado, macadamia nut, and jojoba seed oil, Money Hunny is the sweet remedy to dry, brittle, and breaking hair. You can use her on dry or damp hair for whenever you need that extra boost of TLC.

Now that you’ve got that hair care routine on lock 🫡 you may be wondering if the dead of winter is still a good time to try on a new color. When you’re using AF hair dye, it’s always a good time to switch up your color!  Every color is formulated the same way - FULL of deep conditioning properties so it’s basically a color conditioner! ✨Girl Math✨So you know what that means! You can change your hair literally as many times as you want, all. year. long. Of course it depends on where you’re at now, but if you’re starting out fresh, use Bleach, Please to get to that platinum blonde, throw on Sterling for a totally icy look, and play around with the blues of the AF rainbow to find that wintery wonderland ‘do. Not sure what your starting point is? Check out our breakdown on the Color Wheel!

And of course, we wouldn’t be your hair bestie without dishing our top inspo that’s making us reach for a new bottle of dye because OMG.
