The Best Color-Friendly and Heatless Hairstyles for Festival Season

The Best Color-Friendly and Heatless Hairstyles for Festival Season

Spring and Summer are knocking at our door and this means only one thing - it’s festival season! Whatever your taste in music is, festivals are the perfect place to let loose and experiment with your personal style -  whether it be through your outfit, your makeup, or of course your hair. We’re here to give you a little inspo based on some of the festivals our team is heading to this season!

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, April in Indio

The festival that’s become synonymous with the season as it brings together music fans from every genre. With this year’s headliners being Lana Del Rey, Tyler the Creator, and Doja Cat we just KNOW that the crowd is going to be dressed to the nines, even in the windy desert. Coachella is always one of the most trend-forward crowds every festival season, so we fully expect to see heads turn with hair colors that are already trending like pastel pink, cherry cola, and Aquamarine. If you’re looking to show up in some of the season’s hottest hair color trends, we got you babe. Shop Frose hair dye if you’re already bleached, try our Fox Fam favorite Aquamarine hair color on a standout money piece, or get on the Cherry Cola trend with a mix of 75% Ritual Hair Dye and 25% Wrath hair dye

No matter the style of your hair, you’ll stand out if you’re rocking vivid colors. But if you’re in the hot and windy desert, you may want to consider pulling some hair off your face with braids. The double French braid, in particular, is a festival favorite. Perfect your braids with Arctic Fox Money Hunny hair serum to help tame any stray hairs for the sleekest braids. It's the secret weapon for taming those pesky flyaways, giving your braids a smooth finish and making them a breeze to style! And if your hair is showing off a bold color (or maybe even two) - you’ll take these easy-breezy styles to a new level. 😍

    StageCoach Festival, April in Indio

Yee-Hawt, Fox! If you’re heading to the desert but for some country jams with Eric Church, Jelly Roll, Miranda Lambert, Morgan Wallen, Elle King, Diplo and Post Malone (WHAT?!) we hope you’ve got your cowboy boots and hat packed. While we typically opt for hats if we haven’t washed in like a very, VERY long time, if there’s a time and a place for a cowboy hat, it’s Stagecoach and we’ve got an on-the-nose color for you to stand out in. Have you met Space Cowgirl? Space Cowgirl hair dye is our electric green with leafy undertones ready to send you straight into a sensory slime experience. It’ll work best on levels 8 and up! Maybe you don’t want to dye your entire head, but we love seeing our blonde babes use her for some peek-a-boos and money pieces. You’ll be in the desert for three days, so we HIGHLY recommend packing our Road Trip dry shampoo to revive your hair throughout the weekend!

Ultra Music Festival, March in Miami and EDC, June in Las Vegas

Where are our rave girlies at? Festival season may not be much different for you since we know you’re at it year round but Ultra and EDC are major moments and we know you’re just like us, all you see is COLOR. Make a statement from day to night with our electrifying UV-reactive shades like Neon Moon, Electric Paradise, and Porange. Not only will your locks be neon AF during the day, once the glow sticks come out your hair will be part of the show.

Why do we love these glowing colors? Neon Moon is a bright, vibrant neon hair color that’s truly out of this world, Electric Paradise is a vivid neon pink hair color with tropical coral undertones, and Porange is a bright orange shade with a peachy undertone. Since all three neon colors are UV reactive, they will turn out best on hair that is around a level 9 or lighter. The perfect shades to dance with under the electric sky! And remember, all our dyes are semi-permanent and formulated to fade so your boss isn’t coming for you once you’re back to work.

    Hangout Festival, May in Alabama

Missed your chance to see Lana in the desert? Good news, you can catch her by the beach along with Zach Bryan, Odesza, The Chainsmokers, Renee Rapp and more. We love the vibe of this festival SO much. The music, the beach, the crowd, your style options are endless. We’re pretty obsessed with the idea of going pastel for a softer look yet a full-on transformation for this seaside festival since you’ll be at the beach. Achieving this dreamy look requires some serious lightening – cue the bleach! But fear not, with Arctic Fox’s Bleach, Please kit, you can lighten your locks to the perfect shade that can give an easy canvas for any pastel color. Picture yourself singing along to your favorites, beachside in a gorgeous all-over pink pastel like Frosé.

    Bonnaroo, June in Tennessee

This ones for our low-maintenance Foxes. We know you’ll probably spend the weekend camping and your typical hair care routine is out the window. Be sure to pack our Volumizing Dry Shampoo so you can play around with easy hair styles every day.

We love space buns at Bonnaroo, a quirky hairstyle that is playful but super easy! Space buns are versatile and work for so many hair types and lengths. Create your buns by pulling your hair into two ponytails, twist them into a small hoop and tie with another ponytail to secure! Add a little Vacay Volumizing Shampoo for some texture and take out any oil you might have that can make your buns flop! Braids are another easy go to, but we’re obsessing over bubble ponys - as many as you can! These easy and fun styles will take you from stage to stage so you can just chill and take in the music!

    Lollapalooza, August in Chicago

The lineup is literally being announced TODAY and we’re on the edge of our seat. Happening towards the end of summer in the heart of Chicago, we love this as a way to keep experimenting with vivids that will help transition into fall. Our Ginger Flare hair color is always on fire and borders the line of a natural color, or use some of that leftover Ritual and Frose hair dye to create this gorgeous dusty rose, the fade is sure to be a stunner.

We can’t talk about festival season without talking about hair tinsel! With the Y2K trend being at the forefront again, all thanks to TikTok, it only makes sense that tinsel is in the mix. Tinsel is quite easy to pack and DIY. Lollapalooza brings people together from all over and we love how diverse a simple accessory like hair tinsel can be! Tinsel is such an easy way to level up your already colorful look.

Made in America, September in Philly

Sadly, Made in America was canceled last year so we’re really hoping it comes back with a bang this September. Curated by Jay-Z and home to our favorite hip hop artists, we’re already planning our looks to close out the summer in Philly. We love using this time of year to refresh our locks and even revive our blonde with some Bleach, Please. For Made in America, if we’re not going blonde we’re looking to lean into red hues and mixes like Cowboy Copper. A look we still cannot get over is Nai’s mix of Cosmic Sunshine hair dye, Purple AF hair dye and Ginger Flare to get this fire look!

Level Up: Dyeing Your Hair Pastel

Level Up: Dyeing Your Hair Pastel

    @catecutdye in Frosé

So, you want to dye your hair pastel? We don’t blame you. These hair color shades are oh so dreamy. BUT they’re also the most fickle shades of the rainbow that require lots of added TLC. But don’t worry, they can still be achieved with proper prep and maintenance. And lucky for you, we know all of the tips and tricks to going pastel in the comfort of your own home to get the most perfect pastel look for less!

But first, let's talk about hair levels. All pastel shades require a level 10 base for their soft pigment to really pop. If you aren’t quite there yet, pre lightening your hair to the appropriate level is a MUST. However, getting to a level 10 is a marathon, not a sprint. It may take multiple tries before getting to your desired level. To learn more about the process of bleaching, read our blog on all things at-home lightening to get the perfect lift.

How do you know what level your hair is? When we talk about your hair "level" it's just a standardized way to identify the lightness of your hair. When you're using a semi-permanent hair color, your current hair color is key to the end result. So if you're not quite sure how to find your hair level we're here to help.

Can I go pastel if I have dark hair?

Short Answer: Not without lightening your hair first!

Long Answer: If you want a light color like lavender, you may not need to be platinum to get stellar results. However, pastel shades will require a level 10 base. Since the tones in your hair are going to interact with any color you put on top - if you have a yellow-toned, level 9 blonde base and you use a pastel blue hair dye (like Periwinkle), the blues will mix with the yellow tones in the hair to create a green. The same thing happens on non-platinum blondes with Sterling hair dye (since Sterling has a blue base).

Think of your hair like a canvas! The darker your canvas, the harder it is for colors to show up when you paint over it. Hair is just the same! The lighter and closer to platinum you get, the more vibrant these super light shades will appear. Toning out any yellow left during the bleaching process before applying your pastel shades will make sure your desired shade shows up the most true to tone.

#AFPROTIP: Something you can do to counteract yellow tones without a toner is add a few drops of Purple to your mix! Periwinkle hair dye or Purple AF hair dye are great candidates. Purple helps off-set yellow tones to prevent a blue shade from pulling green!

My hair isn't platinum but it is pre-lightened blonde. What pastel colors would work well for me?

Short Answer: Warm tones are the easiest, since they work well with the yellow tones already present in bleached hair!

Long Answer: Pastel pinks will go rose gold on golden blondes and other pinks will appear peach depending on the base color of the dye. In general, warm tones are going to work well on level 9 hair. Also, purple is the holy grail of colors since it acts as a bridge embodying both warm and cool tones. A pastel purple can actually help tone your level 9+ hair! Pastel aqua greens can work too, but you might need to adjust your recipe and add in a few drops of a purple or another shade to prevent it from going too grassy.

But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all of the color choices, don’t worry! If you need help or personalized color recommendations you can always reach out and ask us!

    How long will pastels last?

Short Answer: It can vary anywhere between 4-8 weeks! It mostly depends on how you care for and wash your hair. But generally, they don't last as long as deeper or more pigmented shades.

Long Answer: If you love pastels and don't want to go a deeper shade and let it fade, maintenance is absolutely key, babes. Not only will you need to touch up your roots (since lightening your hair is essential) but you'll also need to recolor your hair often to maintain its vibrancy.

A simple way to upkeep while you wash your hair is by adding in a few drops of a more pigmented version of your selected shade to your conditioner (An example of this would be by adding in a few drops of Virgin Pink hair dye to your conditioner, if you’re currently rocking Frosé) to keep up our color in-between applications. It should come as no surprise that the lighter your hair is to begin with, the longer it will hold color. Be sure to keep that in mind!

#AFPROTIP: Maintaining pastel hair can be a commitment but if you aren't ready for a full on bleach out, you can always have a stylist create a balayage for you that's light enough for you to color on your own! Then, you won't need to touch up your roots every few weeks and you can do different pastel shades that suit your mood at any time!

How can I make my pastel hair last longer?

Short Answer: Adding a few drops of a more pigmented shade to your conditioner in between applications + dry shampoo.

Long Answer: The bottom line is that the more you wash your hair the more your color will fade! The first thing to consider is dry shampoo! Grab some HERE to keep your hair feeling and looking fresh between washes. Secondly, you'll want to make sure you are using color-safe products (ie. shampoo and conditioner) that don't contain harsh chemicals, sulfates or silicones. And lastly, you can create your own color conditioner by adding in a few drops of a deeper version of the pastel shade you have to keep color vibrant in between applications! Plus, you can add a few drops of the darker shade to your OG mix to give it a bit more staying power.

Is there a product I can use to turn my leftover darker dyes into a pastel?

Short Answer: Yes! It’s called Arctic Mist and it was made specifically for cases like this!

Long Answer: Arctic Mist is the same consistency as our dyes but it’s a completely colorless pastelizer made specifically to mix with our deeper shades to lighten them up as much as you want!. Simply add a base of Arctic Mist to a bowl and add in your deeper shade one drop at a time until you get your desired result!

@cheylist in Virgin Pink and Arctic Mist Diluter

How can I see how each color will look on my hair?

Short Answer: Check our product pages! We have swatches on each one! BUT make sure to always do a strand test to make sure you’ll end up with a result you’ll be happy with!

Long Answer: Everyone's hair is different and results will always vary based on how often you’ve dyed, your hair health, your hair level - so a strand test is your best friend. That said, you can check our product swatches to get a general idea of how each shade is going to look on your hair level! They look a little something like this:

Here are the hair levels you'll generally need for each pastel shade:

5 Ways to Bleach Your Hair

5 Ways to Bleach Your Hair

Bleached hair is the ultimate canvas for creating literally whatever the f*** you want. Split dyes? Money pieces? Dreamy pastels? Bleach, Please can do it all! And YES, she’s totally DIY friendly! 💅

We’ve come prepared with not only 5 ways to bleach your hair yourself, but also some tips for using Bleach, Please, to provide you with the easiest DIY experience at home. Prior to bleaching, there’s just a couple of things to ask yourself.

    How does bleaching work?

And what is the goal I’m trying to achieve with bleaching?

So let’s talk about it! 💖

    How does bleaching work? 👱‍♀️

Essentially, bleach has one job and that’s to open the hair cuticle and dissolve any color from the hair. We’ve formulated Bleach, Please to be as gentle as possible - but at the end of the day, all bleach has the potential to cause damage since it opens up the hair cuticle, which can leave hair feeling dry or rough. Keep this in mind and take care of your hair both before AND after you bleach it! Every Bleach, Please kit comes with full instructions, but the basics of bleaching will always apply. Prior to bleaching, you'll want to give your hair PLENTY of TLC and conditioning! For step by step instructions + before/after care, head over to our blog on How to Bleach Your Hair Using Bleach, Please!

What is the goal I’m trying to achieve with bleaching? 👀

Maybe you’re trying to go for a pop of color, an all over bleach, a root touch up or just something fun and unique, we want you to feel confident in doing so! With that, let’s jump into the 5 ways to bleach your hair at home, like a pro!

    1. Prepping for Pastels 💓

@cheylist in Virgin Pink and Arctic Mist Diluter

No matter your hair level (brunette OR blondes), you’re going to need to bleach your hair to a level 10 in order for pastel hair dye to show up the most vividly. Make sure you’re in a well-ventilated room when you’re applying the bleach, and always wear gloves to protect your hands 🤚 All of your hair should be fully saturated for an even lift, and you’ll want to work as quickly as you can to ensure it all lightens to the same level! We also recommend that you stay ⅛ of an inch away from your scalp when using Bleach, Please for best results and to prevent any possible irritation.

Since this is an all-over bleach job, we suggest sectioning your hair however is most efficient for you! Need to use mirrors to see the back of your head? DO IT!🪞Just be certain to save the roots for last as they tend to lift the fastest and should be applied AFTER you’ve applied the bleach to the ends of the hair already. Be sure to also check your hair every 5 minutes to avoid over processing ⏳

✨ AF Pro Tip: You don’t want to let the bleach sit any longer than 45 minutes regardless of the level of lift, to prevent any serious damage from occurring. Bleach, Please is formulated with some of the best ingredients to prevent damage but remember… it’s still bleach, bestie!

After bleaching, be sure to take note that your hair may have a yellow hue to it and may need to be toned before applying color or else you may not achieve the pastel shade you’re going for. As your bestie, we can’t allow that to happen! Sooo here is how to create a DIY toner using Periwinkle + Arctic Mist 💛⏩🤍

After you’ve rinsed the bleach out, allow the hair to dry 65% of the way. While your hair is still damp, mix a few drops of Periwinkle in a bowl of Arctic Mist Diluter, apply this mixture on your hair, let sit for 45 minutes, and rinse. From there, you’re all set to color your hair with the perfect pastel… Just in time for Spring! 🌸🌿🫧

    @mystiquemadeline in Frosé

    2. Money Pieces 💰🤑

    @glittersailor in Sunset Orange

Looking for a low maintenance way to achieve a pop of color? 💥 Money Pieces are the first thing that comes to be mind because of how easy and it is to do with Bleach, Please plus it’s pretty low commitment!

All you need to do in order to achieve the perfect money piece at home is evenly separate your face-framing pieces of hair from the front and section them off. Once you’ve got this section secure, tie the rest of your hair back!

From here, simply follow the directions included in each Bleach, Please Kit to lighten those front pieces! Apply a stunning color over it and you just created a work of art! 😍

@lizblendz in Purple AF, Virgin Pink, Arctic Mist Diluter

Pssst… You can also do just your bangs using the same method! 👇

@__panterra_yoga__ in Cosmic Sunshine and Sunset Orange

    3. Root Touch Up 🖌️

If you just wanted to touch up your pastel or you’re going for a Billie Eilish vibe with vivid dyed roots, we got you!

    @caitlyn_calupad in Poison

It’s good to know that we have generally thicker hair in the back of the head and thin and more delicate hair in the front, causing the back of the head to take a tad longer to lighten.

To best approach this, we recommend separating the hair into 2 different sections… The front face-framing pieces and the back of your head. However, if you’re just looking for color on the top of the head and not necessarily all of your roots, you’d just section off that spot and work at the roots where you’d like to apply the color 🥰

For all-over root bleaching, the steps are as follows:

Starting with the back of your head, you’ll want to clip the majority of your hair up and leave only the very bottom pieces of the hair in the back. Using a dye brush, you’ll apply the bleach to just the roots and continue working your way all the way up the back of your head, until the upper and under sides of each section have been covered in the bleach mixture ☑️

🏃‍♀️ Quickly and steadily, you’ll now proceed with the front face-framing section that we had separated earlier. Cover all of the roots until you’ve coated them in bleach and as mentioned before, check on your roots every 5 minutes to be certain you don’t leave the bleach on any longer than necessary. Rinse … and you’re ready to go in with your favorite pastel or even bold red! The world is your oyster, babe! 🌈

     4. Split Dye 🧑‍🎤👩‍🎤

One of the easiest methods to bleach + dye your hair and one of our personal favorites… the split dye! 🤩 I’m sure you’re thinking that you’re just going to section the hair into 2 sections based on where the split dye is going to be (down the middle, split dye on the bangs, horizontally, etc) and you’re absolutely right! … See! You’re a DIY pro already 😜

Section the hair, follow the instructions provided and save the roots for last. We even love to see one side of the split left uncolored and only bleached. Yep, that’s it! Now for the fun part… the inspo!

✨ AF Pro Tip: You can even just bleach one half of your hair and leave the other half your natural color. This look is such a stylish yet effective way to add some color to your hair and still give the illusion of a multi-colored look!

@hadar_kawaii_hair in Violet Dream, Poseidon, Aquamarine, Neon Moon, Iris Green

@jeks951_ in Poseidon, Blue Jean Baby

@selinamirza in Electric Paradise, Virgin Pink, Space Cowgirl

@neg4tive_creep in Electric Paradise, Sunset Orange, and Virgin Pink

    5. Bleach Bath

This method is actually most commonly used to remove a stubborn hair color but this also can help you achieve a blank canvas yet again, to pursue your new hue 😘

    What you’ll need:

    - Water

    - Dandruff shampoo

    - Bleach, Please Kit

To start, you’ll want to first attempt a color remover meant for semi-permanent color. If there is still color remaining, go ahead and get started with your bleach bath. Mixing your bleach and developer first, you’ll add in one good squeeze of anti dandruff shampoo (can be a cheap dollar store shampoo or whatever you can get your hands on) and then add in about ⅓ a cup of water or until the mixture appears smooth and not too runny.

Applying this mixture to the middle and ends of your hair (avoiding the scalp and roots completely) go ahead and cover only the color-treated hair and let it sit for no more than 5-7 minutes before you rinse. While you’re rinsing, we recommend using a purple shampoo to tone the hair at the same time. This gives you an even outcome and a perfect canvas to begin your new masterpiece!

    Color Spotlight: Frosé Hair Dye

    Color Spotlight: Frosé Hair Dye

Baby pink hair has been a trendsetter for as long as we can remember, if you’ve been looking for a true pastel pink, we got it on tap! Our baby pink pastel hair dye, Frosé is the sweetest hue! Her soft, true pink tones are perfect for dipping your toe into the world of vivids with a non-committal pink that’ll still turn heads.

Frosé is much more of a true pink compared to some of our other pink tones. If you’ve worked with diluted Virgin Pink or Electric Paradise, you know that these colors have a slight  magenta/fuchsia and coral/peachy undertone respectively. But Frosé is right in the middle of the spectrum between the two, and doesn’t lean too strongly into either the cool or warm range! She looks stunning on warm AND neutral undertones, and eases any lucky head of hair into the world of color with stunning hues that make you want to pour her up as much as you can.

    Coloring with Frosé

Everyone wants to go pastel - especially baby pink pastel. But getting there can be slightly trickier than it seems! When it comes to Frosé (and any pastel) your base is everything, and we mean EVERYTHING. You MUST start with a clean, platinum base for the true baby pink you’re looking for and any other base color will yield different results, or not results at all. If you have had a brighter color and are looking to transition to Frosé, you’ll need to completely remove your color with a color remover and make sure your base is clean before splashing on Frosé and expecting the baby pink of your dreams. That being said, Frosé is a true pink and if you’re ready for the upkeep, you can enjoy the dreamiest pink head of hair as long as you’d like!

Level Up: Frosé on Different Hair Levels

Frosé is the baby pink stunner in our pastel lineup, so you’ll need a platinum base to get the full effect! On a level 8 blonde, Frosé hair dye will give a dusty rose, while level 7 blondes will see a darker, smokier rose - both are stunning. If you want a barely-there pastel and are searching for just a hint of pink, start with level 10 platinum hair and dilute with Arctic Mist Diluter as needed. Don’t forget to do a trusted strand test so you can be sure that your hair is at the level needed for that perfect baby pink. 👑

    Get Faded: How Frosé Fades

Since Frosé is a pastel stunner, consistent maintenance and upkeep is a must to keep that baby pink hue look its best. This hair dye tends to fade quicker than some of our other vivids, which is very common when it comes to pastel hair dye. You’ll want to keep a bottle on hand for frequent touch ups, and make sure your base color is a level 10 for best results. Luckily, our DIY friendly formula makes it easier than ever to add color to your conditioner, or do a quick touch up session in the comfort of your own home! On the other hand, if you’re looking for a quick pink blush to those locks that’ll fade out beautifully - Frosé is your girl.

Frosé Mixology: Customizing the Baby Pink Pastel

Like our entire semi-permanent hair dye lineup, Frosé is easy to customize and can make a STUNNING mix with other pinks, and almost any other AF hair color! Since Frosé is a pastel hair dye and is naturally lighter than our other pinks, she makes an excellent addition to custom mixes, but keep in mind that if you’re looking for the true baby pink, she shines on her own. Let’s dive into some custom mixes with our fav pink pastel!

    Barbie Dreamhouse

    Frosé and Electric Paradise

Start with a level 10 base and mix up a 50/50 ratio of Frosé hair dye and Electric Paradise hair dye! Electric Paradise is UV reactive, so this mix will have a slight tint of her glowing properties, but not too overpowering. It’s the pink of our collective Barbie DREAMS.

    Bubblegum Pink

    Frosé and Wrath

We can just hear the bubblegum pop when we look at this mix. Sassy, flirty, and the life of the party, bring this mix to life on a level 10 base with two parts Frosé hair dye to one part Wrath hair dye. Who knew our red stunner with our baby pink pastel could create such an electrifying mix!?

Girls Night and Periwinkle are on the lighter end of our vivid hair dyes, so you absolutely need to start with level 9 hair or lighter! Halo

    Virgin and Poison

Looking to mix it up even more? 👀 Check out halo hair, it’s literally everywhere right now! A halo color placement is one color on your first layer of hair, and a different color on the layers beneath it. It gives a gorgeous peekaboo effect and the styling options are truly endless! This fiery look from @alexajdmakeup was made using Virgin Pink hair dye and Poison hair dye. We love this color combo, especially during the month of February when red and pink hues reign supreme. Lucky for you AF shades are made for creating these daring looks at home! Virgin Pink hair color is a vibrant hot pink and will appear as a magenta tint on brown hair, its most vibrant form comes with pre-lightened hair. Poison hair color has a slight orange undertone that will prevent it from fading to a pink. Poison will give a dark, subtle tint to darker tones of hair but will turn out most vibrantly on hair that is pre-lightened to around a level 8. Give it a go the next time you’re feeling spicy!

Now that you’re a pro at color combos make sure you tag us on IG @arcticfoxhaircolor if you try out any of these mixes or split dyes. We love to see you explore your inner hairstylist with our DIY friendly hair dye colors!
