Red Hair Highlights: Everything You Need to Know

Red Hair Highlights: Everything You Need to Know

Okay, let's talk about red hair highlights for a sec, they're literally the hair equivalent of that perfect filter that makes everything look better. We've been obsessed with this timeless technique forever, and for good reason! Highlights add dimension, brightness, and that effortless "I woke up like this" vibe that we're all chasing. Now, you might be thinking highlights are strictly a salon thing, but plot twist: you can totally achieve magazine-worthy results right from your bathroom (yes, really!).

And as if we couldn't already love this hair coloring technique enough, here comes red highlights to make our jaws drop even more. We're talking about that perfect pop of warmth that can transform your entire look from basic to absolutely stunning.

In this blog, we're going to break down different types of highlights, show you exactly how to achieve them at home, and spill all the tea on the best color pairings for red hair highlights. Trust us, your hair game is about to level up.

    Different Types of Highlights

    Classic Highlights

Classic highlights are all about brightening your overall look, adding lightness and dimension, and creating that gorgeous sun-kissed effect, and what better shade to do that than red? This is the perfect look for anyone who wants to add some spice in a more subtle and timeless way. Think effortlessly chic with just the right amount of drama.

How to get the look at home:

    1. Use hair clips to section out the pieces of hair that you want to be colorful. Pro tip: Weave in and out while sectioning so you're dyeing different layers and adding extra dimension – this is what separates amateur hour from professional-looking results!

    2. Use brushes to evenly dye the sections with your desired shade of red. Bright cherry, dark maroon, or fiery red with a hint of orange are a few of our favorite choices! Pro tip: Wear a designated dye shirt, apply petroleum jelly around your hairline, and wear protective gloves to prevent staining (trust us on this one – red dye has a mind of its own).

    3. Leave it in for at least 30 minutes (but longer saturation time doesn't hurt!). For the best results, cover your hair with a plastic cap and use heat or blow dry for up to 15 minutes.

    4. Rinse your hair in cold water until it runs as close to clear as possible.

    5. Style as desired, pose for a picture, and share your new look with us!

    Chunky Highlights

Ready to make a statement? Chunky red hair highlights add bold contrast with a serious pop of color. This look was super popular in the Y2K era and gives off fun, youthful, and rebellious energy that we're absolutely here for. This is also a great look for anyone who's more low-maintenance since it's easy to keep up with – win-win!

How to get the look at home:

    1. Use hair clips to section out large chunks of hair that you want to pop! Pro tip: Lighten your highlight sections with bleach before going in with red for extra vibrancy – this step is a total game-changer for getting that intense color payoff.

    2. Use brushes to evenly dye the sections with your desired shade of red. Bright cherry, dark maroon, or fiery red with a hint of orange are a few of our favorite choices! Pro tip: Wear a designated dye shirt, apply petroleum jelly around your hairline, and wear protective gloves to prevent staining.

    Color Pairings That Actually Work

    Natural Hair Color

This is the most common and foolproof approach since all you have to deal with is one shade and leave the rest of your hair virgin. Whether you're brunette, blonde, or already rocking some natural red tones, red hair highlights blend beautifully with your base color for a look that's striking but never overwhelming.

    Vivid Hair Colors

Here's where things get really fun! Analogous shades (colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel) are the best choice when experimenting with blending vivid colors because if bleeding occurs, they won't turn muddy. With color theory in mind, some of our favorite vivid options to go with red highlights are pink, purple, orange, and yellow. These combinations create that rainbow effect that's perfect for anyone ready to fully embrace their colorful hair era.

    FAQ

What kind of highlights should a redhead get?

Pink, orange, red, and yellow highlights look effortlessly amazing on redheads! These warm tones complement natural red hair beautifully and enhance your existing color story.

What to know before getting highlights?

Before getting highlights, we recommend knowing what kind of highlights you want (classic or chunky) and what shades you want them to be. Having a clear vision helps ensure you get the results you're dreaming of!

Is it hard to maintain red highlights?

Not necessarily! As long as you mix red hair highlights with your natural hair color or shades that go well with them, like pink or orange, you won't have to worry about bleeding and muddiness. Wash your hair with cold water and color-safe shampoo and conditioner to easily maintain your red highlights.

    Do red highlights need bleach?

Yes, depending on your desired outcome and how vivid you want your red highlights to be, you will need to bleach first. We always recommend performing a strand test first to ensure you get your expected color!

Easy Blue Hair Dye Removal: How To Get Blue Out of Your Hair

Easy Blue Hair Dye Removal: How To Get Blue Out of Your Hair

Ready to say goodbye to your ocean-inspired blue hair dye color? We totally understand! While those stunning sapphire or electric blue tones may have been your dream color just a few weeks ago, sometimes you're ready to dive into something new.

Let's explore some proven methods to help you transition away from your blue hair while keeping your strands healthy and happy.✨

The Gentlest Option: Wash More Frequently 🧼

    Poseidon fading

Shampoo is your best friend! Increase your wash frequency to gradually break down the blue pigment over multiple sessions. Blue dye molecules, especially darker blues, can be quite tenacious and may fade more slowly than other fashion colors, but consistent washing will help them release over time.

Use warm water (avoid scalding hot!) and shampoo to gently coax those pigments to loosen their hold. For extra fading power, incorporate a clarifying shampoo into your routine once or twice weekly.

PRO TIP: Use Money Hunny as a leave-in conditioner to maintain moisture and softness throughout this process. More frequent washing can strip natural oils, so this hydrating step is absolutely essential!

Next Best Thing: Vitamin C Hair Mask ☀️

    Aquamarine fading

For enhanced fading power without harsh chemicals, try this DIY vitamin C treatment:

    1. Mix colorless vitamin C powder or crushed vitamin C tablets with your shampoo to create a thick paste

    2. Apply to damp hair (not dripping wet)

    3. Leave on for 30-60 minutes

    4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water

The acidic nature of vitamin C helps break down synthetic color molecules while being much gentler than chemical color removers.

PRO TIP: Follow up with a deep conditioning treatment like Pool Party to restore moisture! This method can be somewhat drying, so giving your hair extra nourishment afterward is crucial.

The Fun Route: Take A Dip 🏊♀️

    Jinx fading

We've got the most fun solution ever – hit the pool or beach! Sunshine, sea salt, and chlorinated water are basically nature's gentle hair color removers, working their magic to gradually fade that blue without harsh chemicals. So grab your cutest swimsuit, let those blue locks flow free, and make fading your hair color the best part of your summer plans. Whether we're doing laps at the local pool or catching waves at the beach, you'll be having a blast while naturally lightening your hair color – talk about a win-win situation!

    Last Resort: Color Remover🧪

    Blue Jean Baby fading

When gentler approaches aren't delivering results, a commercial color remover can effectively lift semi-permanent blue dye. These products are specifically designed to break down artificial color molecules without the harshness of bleach:

    1. Go to your nearest beauty supply store and pick out the right color remover for your hair (semi-permanent or permanent).

    2. Follow the product instructions carefully - typically applied to dry hair for best results

    3. Process for the recommended time (usually 20-45 minutes)

    4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and follow with a deep conditioning treatment

PRO TIP: Color removers work best on semi-permanent dyes like our Arctic Fox colors! They're gentler than bleach but more effective than DIY methods. Always do a strand test first and ensure good ventilation when using these products.

Easy Blue Hair Cover Ups: Your Color Wheel Guide 🌈

So you're ready to switch up that gorgeous blue, but don't want to go through the whole bleaching drama? Here's the tea: the color wheel is about to become your new BFF when it comes to easy blue hair cover ups.

Since green and purple are blue's literal neighbors on the color wheel, they're your absolute best bet for a smooth, damage-free transition that won't leave you crying in the salon chair. Think of it like this – you're basically just sliding over one spot instead of doing a complete 180!

Whether you're dreaming of that witchy forest green or craving some mystical purple vibes, these shades will blend beautifully with any leftover blue tones, giving you that seamless color transition without the commitment (or the chemical chaos).

    Frequently Asked Questions 💭

Is blue hair dye hard to get out?

Blue hair dye can be stubborn to remove, especially darker shades like navy or midnight blue. Permanent dyes penetrate deep into the hair shaft and chemically bond, making them much harder to remove than semi-permanent dyes that coat the surface and fade naturally over 2-8 weeks.

Your removal method depends on the dye type: frequent washing and vitamin C masks work for semi-permanent, while permanent colors need more intensive treatments like color removers. Contact our color specialists at [email protected] for personalized guidance!

How can I remove blue hair color without damaging my hair?

The gentlest options are frequent washing with warm water and shampoo, or the vitamin C hair mask method. Both gradually fade color without harsh chemicals.

Can I use bleach to remove blue hair dye?

Yes, but it's not recommended. Bleach can damage color-treated hair and cause staining since it's designed for virgin hair, not dye removal. If you must use bleach, dilute it with shampoo to create a gentler bleach bath. Color removers are safer and more effective for removing artificial dyes. Always do a strand test first and consult with our color specialists when you need extra guidance.

Which color cancels out blue hair?

Use warm-toned shades like Sunset Orange mixed with Arctic Mist Diluter or Cosmic Sunshine to neutralize remaining blue tones. Orange and yellow pigments cancel out blue undertones through color theory.

Which hair types hold color more stubbornly?

Virgin hair and low porosity hair are super picky about taking color, but once they do? That color is staying put! Think of them as playing hard to get but totally worth it.

High porosity hair grabs color fast but fades just as quickly - it's all damaged cuticles letting that gorgeous shade slip away. Coarse hair has thick cuticles that fight the dye hard, but reward you with long-lasting color. And gray hair? Total rebel - no pigment means maximum resistance BUT that doesn’t mean it’s impossible!

Which colors are hardest to remove?

Blue, green, red, and black are basically the clingy exes of hair color - they move in and refuse to leave!

These shades dig deep and hold on tight, with red being the most notorious drama queen. So before you go full mermaid or gothic vibes, just know you're signing up for a long-term commitment (and probably multiple salon visits to remove). But hey, life's too short for boring hair!

Ready For Your Next Color Adventure? 🎨

Remember, hair color removal is a process—sometimes it requires multiple treatments to achieve your ideal result. Be patient with your hair and provide plenty of TLC between sessions and when in doubt, hit up our color specialists for personalized guidance!

FAQ: Everything You Need to Know About Orange Hair

What color goes best with orange hair color?

Pink, yellow, and blue are our personal favorite colors to pair with orange hair.

Try an orange and pink split dye, a sunset ombre from orange to yellow, or blue hair with an orange money piece for next-level creativity.

What skin tone looks good with orange hair color?

Any skin tone can rock orange hair! However, your undertone may determine which specific shade of orange really makes your skin glow.

Warm undertones look stunning with bright orange hair colors, cool undertones pull off dark copper orange effortlessly, and neutral undertones slay in peachy orange shades.

Does orange hair color fade easily?

    Not necessarily!

The rate at which orange hair fades depends on whether your hair was pre-lightened or virgin before dyeing, if you use semi-permanent or permanent dye, how dark the shade of orange you chose, and your hair care routine.

Our semi-permanent orange hair dyes are designed to last 2-8 weeks and fade within the color spectrum, so you're rocking a beautiful hue of orange after every wash.

To keep your orange hair color as vibrant as possible, we recommend washing less frequently with cold water and using color-safe hair care products.

Brown Hair with Orange Peek-a-boo: How to Get Natalie Cuomo's Look

Brown Hair with Orange Peek-a-boo: How to Get Natalie Cuomo's Look

Ever wondered what happens when a comedian decides to add some color to their life? We sat down with the amazing stylists behind comedian Natalie Cuomo's stunning hair transformation for our "Dye Laughing" collaboration.

Trust us, this isn't just about changing hair color—it's about embracing change, celebrating individuality, and finding the confidence to stand out both on stage and off.

Meet the Dream Team Behind the Look

First things first—let's give credit where credit is due!

We caught up with Siobhan, owner of CutLoose Hair Salon in trendy Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and her star colorist, Randi, who together created Natalie's jaw-dropping transformation.

"I'm the owner of CutLoose Hair Salon in Brooklyn, New York. We've been around for eight years," Siobhan tells us. "It's a fun disco salon that's young and youthful—it's colorful inside so people feel good about cutting loose and having a little fun with their hair."

But it's Randi who brought the color magic to life. With 16 years of experience under her belt, Randi started her journey at just 16 years old. "I was failing high school, and they were like, 'You've got to do something.' So I was like, 'I like doing hair. That could be fun,'" she laughs.

Coming from a small conservative town where creative expression wasn't always encouraged, Randi found her true calling in the city. "Breaking away from that and being in the city and finding people that reflected my personality really helped me come into my own as a stylist," she explains.

The Secret Sauce: Building Trust and Connection

What makes Randi's approach so special? It's all about that connection.

"The most important thing about doing hair is having your clients feel comfortable with you and feeling like they can trust you," Randi explains. "You need to bridge the gap of communication and make sure they know you're on the same page."

This trust-building approach was especially crucial for Natalie's transformation, considering she was stepping outside her comfort zone. Working in Greenpoint means Randi sees all types, from the younger Bushwick crowd to the more mature Williamsburg clientele.

She explains that this diversity is what makes her a better stylist, as each client teaches her something new, so by the time someone sits in her chair, she has the experience to help them achieve exactly the look they're dreaming of.

How Natalie Landed in the Chair

The collaboration came together through connections in the comedy world.

Siobhan's friend David, who works in advertising, connecting comedians with brands, approached her about the Arctic Fox partnership.

"He collaborated with Arctic Fox, and I immediately thought of Randi to do the color because she'd be perfect for it!" Siobhan recalls.

But here's the thing—Natalie was nervous.

"She was really nervous because her brand leans more basic, and that was kind of what she was known for," Randi explains.

"We definitely had to have a lot of conversations about how to find a middle ground between what you want and being creative while still being true to who you are and what feels authentic."

The Creative Process: From Nerves to "Sunset Sherbet"

The transformation was all about collaboration and addressing Natalie's concerns head-on. "I had to speak to her before she even came in, and she was like, 'I don't want rainbow hair. I don't want it all to be purple," Randi recalls.

The solution came through Randi's Pinterest board consultation, where she presented multiple options based on Natalie's "sunset peachy vibes."

But there was a twist—Natalie is colorblind! "I'm like, 'Okay, here are these colors,' and she's like, 'Well, I can't really tell the difference.' So that's where she put her trust in me," Randi explains.

The breakthrough was designing a look that worked for Natalie's lifestyle as a touring comedian. "I did a little halo placement, but I still highlighted it in so it wasn't just a solid chunk of color," Randi explains. "She's on the road all the time, so maintaining it is really hard. This way, you can easily keep recoloring it or do different things, but you still have your natural base so she'd still feel like herself."

Taking those peachy vibes, Randi created her signature sunset blend, a strategic color placement that gave maximum impact with minimal upkeep. "It was a collaboration between all of us and there was a lot of back and forth, but I think we honestly got the best result," Randi concludes.

The Technical Breakdown: Creating the Perfect "Peek-a-Boo"

Porange blended into Peach Prosecco blended into Frosé

Ready for the how-to? Randi breaks down her technique:

The Cut: Siobhan created a shaggy bang that would perfectly complement the color placement.

The Placement: "I did a halo section underneath because I wanted it to peek out from the bang," Randi explains. She kept the sections smaller than you'd imagine for maximum impact with minimal commitment.

The Technique: Instead of solid color blocking, Randi wove out some natural color and left a bit of root for a more diffused, natural effect. "In color blocking, sometimes less is more," she notes.

The Color Blend: Using Arctic Fox's vibrant shades, Randi created a sunset gradient:

"Whenever somebody has a color in mind, especially when they're doing vivids, I'm always like, why would we do one color when we could do like seven?" Randi laughs.

Why This Look Works: The Psychology of Peek-a-Boo Color

This wasn't just about creating a pretty color—it was strategic. "I highlighted the shades in, so it wasn't just a solid chunk of color, and it would grow out nicely because she's on the road all the time. Maintaining it can be really hard," Randi explains.

The placement was genius for someone nervous about change. "After it's lifted, you can easily keep recoloring it or do different things to it, but you still have your natural base. So it would still make her feel like herself without being a complete change."

    The Connection: Comedy Meets Color

What we love most about this transformation is how it mirrors the comedy world. Just like stand-up, changing your hair color is about:

    • Self-Expression: Using your appearance to tell your story

    • Confidence: Having the courage to try something new

    • Boldness: Standing out from the crowd

    • Fun: Not taking yourself too seriously

"It was the perfect way to tiptoe into a big change," Randi explains. "Diffused but still impactful—she had fun and you could tell she was really enjoying it, especially considering how nervous she was at first."

The Final Reveal: "Sunset Sherbet" Hair

When asked to name the look, Randi didn't hesitate: "Peach sunset sherbet."

The result? A stunning peek-a-boo that gave Natalie the perfect pop of color while staying true to her brand. The gradient effect created movement and dimension, while the strategic placement meant she could show as much or as little color as she wanted.

Ready to Get Your Own Peek-a-Boo Look?

Inspired by Natalie's transformation? Here's what you need to recreate her "sunset sherbet" vibe:

    Arctic Fox Colors Used:

    Pro Tips from Randi:

    1. Start with a consultation—communication is key

    2. Consider your lifestyle and maintenance needs

    3. Don't be afraid to blend multiple colors for dimension

    4. Trust your colorist's professional opinion

    5. Remember: sometimes less is more for maximum impact

    The Takeaway: Embrace Your Bold

Just like comedy, hair color is about finding your voice, taking risks, and having fun with the process.

Whether you're stepping on stage or stepping out with new hair, it's all about owning your unique identity and embracing change.

How To Maintain Pink Hair: Tips For Long-Lasting Color

How To Maintain Pink Hair: Tips For Long-Lasting Color

Pink hair has such a vibe – it's bold and fun and gives you that instant confidence boost every time you catch your reflection. But let's be real, bestie: your gorgeous pink locks need a little extra TLC to stay looking fresh.

Depending on the shade you're rocking, some pinks (especially those dreamy pastels) tend to fade faster than their darker, more vibrant sisters.

But don't worry! With these pro tips from Arctic Fox, you'll have no issue keeping your pink hair color around for a good time AND a long time.

    1. Master the Art of Strategic Washing

First things first – put down that daily shampoo habit! Your pink hair color will thank you for washing less frequently.

Aim for 2-3 times per week max, and always use cold water with a color-safe shampoo and conditioner

Between wash days, dry shampoo is your new BFF for soaking up oils and adding volume. Plus, this is the perfect excuse to perfect those cute up-do styles you've been wanting to try!

Here's the science tea: Hot water opens up your hair cuticles, which allows the color molecules to escape faster. Meanwhile, sulfates (those harsh cleansing agents in regular shampoos) strip away natural oils AND your beautiful pink pigment. Cold water keeps those cuticles sealed tight, locking in your color like a vault.

    2. Keep It Cool: Avoid Heat and Sun Exposure

Your hair straightener and curling iron might be tempting, but heat is literally the enemy of vibrant pink hair.

Skip the hot tools whenever possible and embrace air-drying and heatless styling methods – think overnight braids for beachy waves or foam rollers for bouncy curls.

When you're planning to spend time outdoors on sunny days, throw on a cute hat or spritz your hair perfume with UV protection to keep your locks vibrant AF. The sun's UV rays break down color molecules just like they fade your favorite t-shirt, and excessive heat from styling tools does the same thing by opening up the hair cuticle and allowing color to escape.

    3. DIY Color-Depositing Hair Mask Magic

Virgin Pink at different levels of dilution

Here's a game-changing hack that'll make you feel like a hair color genius: mix a small amount of your favorite pink Arctic Fox hair dye into your regular conditioner to create an instant color-depositing mask!

Use this mixture once a week in the shower to gently refresh your pink and keep it looking salon-fresh. It's like giving your hair a mini touch-up every time you condition.

    4. Pool and Ocean Days Require Strategy

We know it's hard to resist a good pool day or beach adventure, but chlorine and saltwater are basically kryptonite to pink hair color.

The chemicals in pool water and the salt in ocean water both strip color molecules right out of your strands.

If you absolutely can't skip the swim session, apply our Pool Party Hair Mask before diving in – it creates a protective barrier that helps minimize color loss.

FAQ: Your Pink Hair Questions Answered

Is pink hair difficult to maintain?

Pink hair color is known to fade faster than other colors, but here's the beautiful thing – it fades gracefully to pretty pastel pink or blonde tones!

It's honestly not hard to maintain vibrancy as long as you follow our guide above, but most importantly, invest in color-safe hair care products.

How do I stop pink hair dye from fading?

The golden rules are: wash less frequently with cold water and color-safe products, avoid heat and sun exposure, use a weekly DIY color-depositing mask, and steer clear of chlorine and saltwater. Follow these steps and your pink will stay poppin'!

What is the hardest hair color to maintain?

Blue hair takes the crown for being the trickiest color to maintain. Pink is actually considered a "safety color" in the hair world since it fades to blonde and makes transitioning to other colors super easy.

    How high-maintenance is pink hair?

While pink can be notorious for fading quickly, that doesn't automatically make it high maintenance. With the right routine and color-safe products, keeping your pink hair vibrant and long-lasting is totally achievable without turning your life upside down.
